This week we put the spotlight on two New York based businesses: Brooklyn Grange and Yennicott Oysters, two companies who celebrate farming traditions while providing delicious food for their communities. Brooklyn Grange operates the world’s largest rooftop soil farms occupying three roofs in New York City growing more than 80,000 lbs of organically-cultivated produce per year. Yennicott Oysters preserves the tradition of oyster farming on the North Fork of Long Island. Oysters are restorative to the bays & estuaries making oyster farming one of the most environmentally-friendly forms of mariculture. Want to learn more? Tune in to Heritage Radio Network’s The Main Course OG for more with Ben Flanner of Brooklyn Grange and Meg Dowe of Yennicott Oysters!
Our friend Drew Nemetz shucks petite Yennicott Oysters for us to taste. This oyster was harvested less than 12-hours before we ate it!
